The automotive and transportation industries are busy innovating. As vehicles & vessels become safer, more connected and running on alternative fuel sources. Trucks, buses and off-road vehicles in agriculture, construction, marine and industrial environments require components that withstand variances in temperature and vibration while providing ingress protection from water and chemicals.

Further, maintaining the quality and integrity of medical and biological products during transport is critical for public health and patient safety and new opportunities arise for sensors to advance measurement and control and for heaters to enable the latest technology, such as micro displays.  

Transport temperature control

Temperature control systems for vans, trucks, trailers, railway trucks, air, sea-going and intermodal containers are becoming more electronically complex but must be energy efficient. For example, maintaining the quality and integrity of medical and biological products during transport is critical for pharmaceutical manufacturers and logistics providers for public health and patient safety.

According to the World Health organization (WHO), 25% of vaccines reach their destination in a degraded state because of incorrect shipping. Almost 30% of scrapped sales at pharmaceutical companies can be attributed to logistics issues.  20% of temperature-sensitive health care products are damaged during transport due to a broken cold chain.

A temperature data logger is an electronic device which typically fits in the hand and is inexpensively designed to collect and store temperature and/or humidity measurement values. Normally independent of a PC. PT100 & PT1000 temperature probes are generally used in data loggers. These thin film platinum temperature probes attached to a datalogger, are designed to meet the demands of transport temperature control with a much wider temperature range than traditional thermistor probes.

A highly reliable, customized PT100 or PT1000 platinum thin film RTD temperature sensor assembly from IST AG, mounted in a probe, performs highly accurate temperature measurements according to the IEC 60751 norm.

The IST AG platinum thin film RTD temperature sensors are developed with the highest quality materials and cover a wide operating temperature range of -200 °C to +1000 °C. The sensors can operate in the harshest conditions while experiencing minimal drift. The construction is extremely robust and due to the small dimensions, the sensors are offered in various housings. The platinum temperature sensors are available with a standard TCR of 3850 ppm/K and with accuracies according to the IEC 60751 norm.

IST also offers custom RTD platinum sensors fitted to application-specific requirements in terms of specified TCR values, nominal resistance, dimensions, housings and lead wires amongst other variations.

Exhaust gases management

Heavy duty motors and marine engines with extremely hot exhaust gas flow need to protect components in the flow path from critical overheating. Managing engine exhaust temperature is a critical task of modern engine control and aftertreatment control systems. Without this function, low emissions over the lifetime of the engine would not be possible. Modern engines are equipped with catalytic exhaust aftertreatment systems that require temperatures within a specified range to ensure adequate catalytic activity, for periodic regeneration and for the prevention of excessive physical and/or chemical fouling.

Platinum RTD temperature sensors mounted in a custom assembly with accuracies according to the IEC 60751 norm are required with the highest quality materials to operate over a temperature range of -200 °C to +1000 °C, operating in the harshest exhaust gas conditions with minimal drift. The sensors must be extremely robust and small.

For example,  IST’s Pt1000 ==> P1K0.216.7W.B.010 mounted in a custom assembly has a resistivity of 1000Ohm at 0°C with a tolerance IEC 60751 F 0,3 (class B) and an operating temperature of -200°C to +750°C.
